Greater Noida AQI: Is the Air Really Worse Than Delhi? 6 Myths Checked Against CPCB Data
18 October 2026 · Rise Propworld Team
Is Greater Noida AQI worse than Delhi? We checked CREA's analysis of CPCB data for winter 2025-26, November 2025 numbers and the stubble burning share. Six myths, six verdicts.

Every November, the same WhatsApp forward does the rounds: "Greater Noida AQI is worse than Delhi. Do not buy there."
Google Trends shows how much people care. Across the last 12 months in India, searches for "greater noida aqi" sat near zero from April to August, then climbed sharply in November and peaked in mid December 2025. The season is starting again now.
So we pulled the actual numbers. No scare, no sugar coating. Here is what the data says about Greater Noida's air, myth by myth.
First, how to read a Greater Noida AQI number
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) uses India's National Air Quality Index. The bands are:
| AQI | Category |
|---|---|
| 0 to 50 | Good |
| 51 to 100 | Satisfactory |
| 101 to 200 | Moderate |
| 201 to 300 | Poor |
| 301 to 400 | Very Poor |
| 401 to 500 | Severe |
CPCB's daily bulletin lists two monitoring stations for Greater Noida, and the city figure is an average of the stations reporting that day. One of them is at Knowledge Park V.
The legal limits behind these bands, as cited by CREA in its reports, are 60 micrograms per cubic metre of PM2.5 averaged over 24 hours and 40 micrograms as an annual average.
Myth 1: "Greater Noida AQI is always worse than Delhi"
Verdict: False, on the latest full-winter data.
The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) analysed CPCB data for winter 2025-26, from 1 October 2025 to 28 February 2026. Its ranking of India's most polluted cities, reported by PTI on 6 March 2026, was:
| Rank | City | Winter PM2.5 average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ghaziabad | 172 µg/m³ |
| 2 | Noida | 166 µg/m³ |
| 3 | Delhi | 163 µg/m³ |
| 4 | Greater Noida | Not published in the reports |
| 7 | Gurgaon | Not published in the reports |
Greater Noida ranked fourth, one place behind Delhi. So on a full-season basis, it was not worse than Delhi. Noida and Ghaziabad were.
Myth 2: "Greater Noida has clean air, it is not like Delhi"
Verdict: Also false.
Fourth most polluted in the country is not clean. The same CREA analysis found that 28 of 29 cities in the National Capital Region had enough data, and none of those 28 met the national PM2.5 standard for the winter.
Anyone selling you "pollution-free Greater Noida" is selling a slogan. The honest version is this: Greater Noida sits in the same airshed as Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad, and shares the same winter problem.
Myth 3: "It is all stubble burning, it will pass in two weeks"
Verdict: Mostly false.
In its November 2025 analysis, reported by The Tribune on 7 December 2025, CREA found that stubble burning contributed on average 7% of Delhi's PM2.5 in November 2025, down from 20% the year before. Yet Delhi's monthly PM2.5 average still rose from 107 in October to 215 in November.
The same report said 19 NCR cities breached the daily PM2.5 standard on all 30 days of November, and 20 of 29 NCR cities were more polluted than in November 2024. Greater Noida was among the highly polluted cities named.
Less stubble smoke and worse air in the same month points to local and regional sources such as vehicles, construction dust and industry, plus winter weather that traps pollution close to the ground.
Myth 4: "Greater Noida's air is bad all year"
Verdict: False.
The problem is seasonal. Delhi's October 2025 average of 107 roughly doubled in November, per CREA. Search behaviour tells the same story: interest in Greater Noida AQI collapses after February and stays near zero through the summer and monsoon.
This matters if you are deciding where to live. Winter is hard across the whole NCR. The rest of the year is a different picture, which is why so many of our clients still choose Greater Noida for its parks, wetlands and open sectors. Our guides to Surajpur Wetland and green escapes for morning walks show the other side of the city.
Myth 5: "The AQI on my phone is the official number"
Verdict: Often not.
Many popular apps and websites display the US AQI scale, which is calculated differently from India's National AQI. The same air can show a higher number on a US scale page than on the CPCB bulletin. If you are comparing cities or reading a GRAP order, use the CPCB number.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) triggers GRAP stages based on the Indian AQI. Stage 1 applies when the AQI is in the 201 to 300 band, according to CareerIndia's 1 October 2026 report on the revised GRAP schedule.
Myth 6: "Move to the Yamuna Expressway and you escape it"
Verdict: We cannot verify this, so we will not claim it.
We could not find published CPCB city averages for the YEIDA sectors comparable to the Greater Noida and Noida figures. Without data, any claim that the expressway sectors have cleaner air is a guess. If someone shows you a number, ask which station it came from.
What the data means if you are buying in Greater Noida
- Do not decide on one bad day. Compare full-season data, like the CREA winter ranking, not a screenshot from a smoggy morning.
- Visit in winter and in summer. We do site visits across the year, and we encourage clients to see a sector in both seasons.
- Think about daily exposure. Commute length, floor height and where you spend most hours matter more to your routine than a city-wide average.
- Ask about green cover if it matters to you. Some projects on our list describe large open areas. ATS Le Grandiose in Sector 150 lists 80% greenery on our page, and Sobha Rivana in Greater Noida West lists around 80% of its land as open and landscaped. Open space does not change the city AQI, but it changes how a home feels to live in.
